Nellie’s return to Haydock saw him win the £100,000 Heritage Handicap, moving from 14/1 to 9/2 favorite. He won by 1.5 lengths, and his rating rose to 101.
A return to Haydock after his gallant victory on his three-year-old debut was always the main objective. Severe weather warnings around Merseyside that week caused Nellie’s odds to drop from 14/1 (a price many shrewd shareholders took) to around 9/2, making him a joint favorite. With everything in his favor for the £100,000 Heritage Handicap over a mile, he was well-positioned.
Though he was a shade slow from draw 2, Pierre nudged him into pole position. From there, he took control of the race, and it was never in doubt. At one point, he had a three-length lead on the field. Ultimately, he won by a length and a half off a mark of 92. The handicapper was clearly impressed, raising his rating to 101 the following Tuesday. It was a day the syndicate members will never forget. A special thanks to Haydock for their excellent hospitality and to Tom and the team for their brilliant training. Winning £120,000 from five victories is an outstanding achievement.
